I liked the article and it resonates with much of what I have come to embrace when I managed people. I suspect however, that maybe your experiences are blocking your view of a broader landscape with positive emerging trends in corporate America. That's not to say all work environments are evolving at the same rate...far from it.

From my own experiences (and of course that taints my views as well) management has been given less authority, not more. Training is teaching managers (in the tech world most of whom have never been trained to manage people!) some of the very lessons you expound. I agree with all of your points - especially the fact that a heterogenous group of individuals is more likely to function effectively, creatively and happily, than a group of like minded, like looking people. (See Malcom Gladwell's Outliers).

We all have choices. We should never put up with "bad bosses" even if that means a temporary hit to your income. Before you decide your boss is bad, an honest conversation about how you feel should be had which might even include HR. I'd also recommend talking to your peers to understand how they feel. Different perspectives, trying get a 360 degree view of any situation will always provide a deeper understanding, reveal new insights and at the very least make you feel more able to "empower" yourself.
