I had a senior engineer working for me once that only used a text screen with 25 lines and 80 columns. While everyone else was fiddling with their GUI based IDEs he was programming. He claimed the brain can only really focus on a few lines of code at a time and all of the rest of the clutter on the screen only detracted you from focusing on the problem. I don't know if he was right or not but I do wonder if seeing more on the screen is a benefit or an invitation to mediocre developers to write functions with way too many lines.
