Allowing a toxic work environment to persist because someone has highly advanced skills and can solve company problems simply creates more problems in the long run.

For one thing, you come to rely on this "go-to" person far too much while ignoring the need to promote and nurture other talented people. Management should never tolerate abusive, bullying "rock stars" simply because it furthers a quarterly goal.

Moreover, while it feels like the right thing to do, mentoring and boxing Jane in with rules she does not already apply to herself will only create a frustrated employee that eventually will have to be let go anyway.

Failure on the part of management to address the situation promptly tells all employees that the way they work is not important at all. Letting her go now is the best medicine for Jane and for the team.

Jane will learn more from this than any mentor could teach. The best teacher is our failures.
